9th Annual United Way of Treasure Valley Children's Book Drive

3/11/2024

Picture
Did you know:
  • 61% of families dealing with financial instability lack books in the home for children
  • Reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade is the single most important indicator for a child's success
  • In 2022, only 60.4 percent of Idaho’s third graders were reading at grade level, according to the Idaho Reading Inventory
  • Students in families experiencing a low-income have greater summer learning loss than their peers in higher-income families
  • Providing a wealth of books to children in families experiencing financial instability can help break the link between poverty and poor academic outcomes

To fill that gap and improve the odds for these children United Way of Treasure Valley is on a mission with their annual Children's Book Drive's to enhance literacy and education for children and families facing financial instability. Their goals is to raise awareness about the crucial role of literacy in a child's development and to organize a children's book drive that addresses the specific needs within our community through the following events:
  • From March 11-29th, the public can donate new of very gently used childrens' books at any Treasure Valley CapEd, WaFd, or Albertsons location.
  • Volunteers can help to clean and package books April 1-5, at the Boise Outlet Mall. In 2023, UWTV had 350 volunteers clean, sort, and box over 20,000 books, valued at over $55,000.
  • Book It Forward! Idaho and Women United will distribute boxes of books to local schools and organizations, who can get them into the hands of kids.
  • A media event will be held in Canyon County, in collaboration with the Caldwell School District, to bring awareness to the importance of children’s literacy.

Please help by donating books or volunteering during the drive!
