The In Search of Civility virtual series a partnership between the Boise Metro Chamber and The Idaho Association of Cities. It addresses complex issues that are often challenging and divisive. Our hosts will demonstrate how civility and democracy should work to address contentious issues, misinformation and partisanship.
This month's topic is "Policymaking in Action." Guests include Brian Kane, Executive Director of the National Association of Attorneys General, Luke Malek, attorney and former state legislator (Republican) and Mat Erpelding, former state legislator (Democrat). The group will discuss how collaborating with stakeholders is the best way to achieve ideal policy. The group will also discuss the impacts of bad policy. Co-Hosts Kelley Packer (Executive Director of the Association of Idaho Cities) and Kathy Griesmyer (Director of Government Affairs at City of Boise) moderate these meaningful panel discussions. Civility in our discourse, we believe, is necessary for the advancement and preservation of relationships, institutions and society. To agree, one must first disagree well. Listening actively to key stakeholders, giving your political opponents respect, the benefit of the doubt, empathy and sympathy for their motives. Ultimately, civility gives us the opportunity for our own ideas and notions to change; bringing improvements to our own lives, and even society as a whole. Civil dialogue can affect positive change, which is why we strive to help important conversations take place. We started this series in January 2021 and remain committed to discussing the challenges facing our state and communities. The FIRST EVER YP Development Summit was a huge success! The Policy Committee is made up of the Chairs of our Boise Metro Chamber Committees, Councils and Industry Boards and includes members of our Board of Advisors and Chamber Leadership. The Policy Committee meets each week during the legislative session, which is traditionally January through March. This committee helps to monitor legislation which affects businesses of all sizes, helps determine the need for advocacy efforts, and formulates position statements on notable issues and legislation. The committee works closely with the Chamber's Government Advocacy team to advocate for business-friendly state and federal policy. This video describes the efforts of the collective group in 2022.
