The program serves young adults navigating executive functioning challenges, anxiety, ADHD, autism, learning differences, slow processing speed, and the broader difficulties of transitioning into adulthood. Gemba's clinical model is built on the recognition that the struggle with adulthood is often not about intelligence, effort, or character, but about consistent access to the regulation, organization, motivation, and follow-through that adult life requires. Through its commitment to individualized care, clinical innovation, and meaningful community integration, Gemba Boise serves as a model for what humane, outcome-oriented transitional care can look like, supporting not only the residents it serves but the families, clinicians, and educators across Idaho and beyond who are working alongside this population. With a mission of safety, healing and freedom from domestic abuse and sexual assault, we provide two safe shelters, counseling, case management, a 24-hour crisis hotline, court advocacy, legal aid, life skills courses, child play therapy, support groups, licensed child care, and financial empowerment. Each program assists our clients as they deal with the trauma, change, and life decisions that come with the brave decision of stepping into freedom. Providing safe places for women to live has been at the core of our mission for 116 years.
The WCA started in 1910 as the Boise YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association). It was established to provide a safe place for young single women to live, eat, and socialize. In addition to room, board, and other basic services, the YWCA offered classes, camps, and community service opportunities to Boise women for decades. In 1980, the YWCA began transforming into the organization that we have today. During this time, the Rape Crisis Alliance and domestic violence Crisis Center were established to continue embodying the mission to provide a safe place for women in new ways. In 1996, we officially became the Women’s and Children’s Alliance. In an effort to be inclusive to all those who are impacted by domestic abuse and sexual assault and need our services and to reflect the diversity of all our clients, in 2020, we transitioned to simply using the acronym WCA. Today we are an organization solely dedicated to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
