Winter Recreation

Get outside under our sunny blue skies. If gravity moves you, try our feather-light powder and short lift lines. With over 16,000 acres in 16 downhill areas, there's something for every taste and ability. Our 46 Nordic ski areas offer lots of room to glide, and Idaho's more than 7,200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails will get your motor running. Take in a festival or winter carnival, try ice-skating, or go tubing with the kids. Your adventure is waiting - for a lot less than you think.

Ski Alpine:  Idaho is blessed with some of the West's driest powder. Try our long, perfectly groomed runs, and died-and-gone-to-heaven backcountry skiing. Check out our world-class resorts and value-priced regional hills. You'll find a family-friendly wonderland without the crowds. Strap on the sticks, it's time to catch the powder hounds.

Ski Nordic:  Idaho's trails run through National Forests, State Parks and ski resorts. In addition, the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation offers thirteen separate trail systems across the state - several with overnight yurt lodging. For a small fee, this Park N' Ski program offers a permit for annual or temporary parking at the trailheads. Stretch out, take a deep breath, and get reacquainted with your sense of wonder.

Snowmobiling:  Idaho has more groomed trails than any other western state - and some of the most spectacular scenery you'll ever see. You can run free through freshly blanketed valleys, across frozen lakes, and wide-open plains. Gas, food, and lodging are nearby in friendly Idaho towns, and many resorts and guest ranches welcome snowmobilers. We're on the way to Yellowstone, so skip the crowds and crank up the fun throttle.  For more information on Idaho’s snowmobile opportunities contact the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation 208.334.4199, www.idahoparks.org/

Additional Winter Activities:  Warm up your winter in Idaho. Light shows and winter carnivals run from December through March. Many resorts offer sledding and tubing fun, and ice-skating can be found both indoors and out. Try a horse-drawn sleigh ride or take a hay wagon to a yurt for dinner. Idaho is a winter wonderland, so get outside and play.
