Boise Airport Awarded Grant to Help Secure Non-Stop Flight to ATL

The Chamber and the Boise Airport are now one step closer to bridging the 2,000 mile gap between our City of Trees and the Eastern U.S.

The Boise Airport was selected for a grant award of $700,000 as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Small Community Air Service Development (SCASD) Program. In support of the DOT grant application, the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce secured a local match of $273,500 from Treasure Valley businesses and organizations to bolster this effort. The DOT SCASD grant recipients are selected through a competitive process. This year, 16 applications were selected for funding from over 50 submissions.

The grant funds will be used to recruit nonstop flight service from Boise to Atlanta with Delta Air Lines. Prior to tapping into the community cash commitments, the Boise Airport would have to secure the new flight and see the route fall short of its revenue goal.

“What makes this grant remarkable is not just the opportunity it creates to bring more connectivity and greater economic activity to Boise, but the fact that it was won through a community-wide effort by the Chamber, local businesses, the City, and the Boise Airport pooling together to expand our reach and make good things happen,” Mayor David Bieter said. “Boise and its Airport are on a roll. I look forward to winning this route and continuing the good news.”

“This is a substantial step for the Boise Airport in securing nonstop flights to the Eastern United States,” said Airport Director Rebecca Hupp. “It has been a goal of ours to improve connections from Boise to the East Coast, and this grant is essential in attracting the new route.”

Bill Connors, President and CEO of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, said “Good things happen when business and political leaders rally around an issue to grow our community. If successful, the addition of a nonstop to Atlanta will give BOI nonstops to the three busiest air service hubs in the nation [Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago] which is a great asset for the Boise business community. Dozens of Boise Chamber member companies committed real support to this grant application through generous financial pledges. The leadership at the City of Boise and the Boise Airport should be congratulated on landing such a competitive grant.”

The majority of the funds are designated to offset the startup costs and risk associated with initiating a new service, while a portion of funds will be allocated to marketing and advertising for the proposed route.

Businesses and organizations that pledged financial support include A10 Capital, LLC; BMC; Block 22, LLC (The Grove Hotel, CenturyLink Arena, & the Idaho Steelheads); the Boise Convention & Visitors Bureau; the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce; the Boise Valley Economic Partnership; the Idaho Department of Commerce - Idaho Tourism; Idaho Power Company; the City of Boise; the Greater Boise Auditorium District; the Idaho Statesman; Intermountain Gas Company; Gardner Company; Micron Technology, Inc.; MWI Veterinary Supply, Inc.; Regence BlueShield of Idaho; United Heritage Insurance; Clearview Cleaning; City of Caldwell; and POWER Engineers, Inc.
